Wallpaper Removal – Hire or DIY?

Why you should Consider Sabatini Pro Painting for Wallpaper Removal Services

Wallpaper removal is becoming a job that more and more homeowners are looking to have done nowadays. It can be a costly project with a lot of unknowns. There is no way of knowing what is behind the paper until you get started. In this short article, well breakdown the costs behind wallpaper removal. If you hire it out professional, and how to tackle the project if you choose to do it yourself.

Costs to Remove Old Wallaper

Wallpaper removal is typically done at company´s hourly rate. This can be anywhere from $45-$85 per hour. If you live in a metro area with a high cost of living, expect the higher rate. The project itself can be very hard to estimate accurately. The time it takes to complete each wallpaper removal job is different. The reason being will be laid out below.

Install Conditions For New Wallpaper

Typically when wallpaper is installed, it needs to be ¨scored¨ or primed with wallpaper primer. This is a special product that allows the wallpaper paste or glue to bond to the wall. In most commercial buildings or higher end homes where the work was done by a professional, this is typically the case. When the wallpaper was installed this way, it usually comes down relatively quickly in large sheets without much fuss. In a perfect world, this would always be the case. However as you already know, many times the wallpaper is installed on walls without the proper primers installed previously. Even worse, sometimes the wallpapers are installed directly onto unsealed (unprimed) drywall (gypsum board). This is the worst of all scenarios. It requires extensive wall repair to be done after the wallpaper itself is removed.

For these reasons, most contractors will typically charge an hourly rate to remove the wallpaper and prep the walls after the work is done. There simply is no way to know how to work was installed or what is behind the wallpaper until you really start getting going. Usually after the first hour or two, the contractor should be able to deduce more or less how long the project will take and you can get an idea of total costs, but even this can be unreliable because not all rooms were installed the same way, and oftentimes even within the same room, install quality can vary. We´ve done projects in the past where the work started out smooth and easy on one side of the room, but the other side required meticulous scraping of every inch of wallspace. You just never know.

Our Process For Removing Wallpaper

Wallpaper Removal Process
Our typical process involves our crew covering the floors with paper (if hardwood) or carpet shield (if carpet). Afterward we will layout plastic coverage all over the protective covering to collect all the paper that is removed from the wall (this also makes disposal quick and easy). From there, we will mix wallpaper removal concentrate into a pump sprayer with warm/hot water and spray all over the top layer. After letting it sit for 2-3 minutes, we will spray it again with the solution and then start removing the paper with a scraper. In wallpaper removal, the wetter the better, so prepare to put lots of liquid on the wall and make sure your floors are properly protected from the water that will run down.

Drywall Repair and Prepwork
After the paper is fully removed from the walls, we will sand the walls down completely using vacuum sanders until smooth. Even still, there will usually be some glue residue from the paper and/or small stubborn pieces of wallpaper or texture that refuse to leave the surface. You´ll usually see a yellow discoloration all over where the wallpaper was. Its very common, and every wallpaper removal job really requires a single coat of oil primer over the entire wall surface to protect the walls from future bubbling or discoloration. WARNING – oil primer is very stinky and will linger for a few hours. If you´re getting this work done in your home, plan to leave the house for a while and potentially even stay in a hotel if doing a significant portion of the house. Keep pets and children away from the fumes as much as possible.

Oil Priming to Prepare for Painting
When the oil primer is dry, you´ll likely have a decent amount of imperfections in the wall that happened from the removal process. If the wallpaper was applied directly to unprimed drywall, there will be a significant amount of repair work that is needed. Joint compound or spackle is used to repair the imperfections and depending on the significance of the damage, you may need more than one coat. When this Drywall Repair work is done, it can be sanded smooth. A typical latex primer (PVA sealer) can be used over the repair work. At this point, the walls can be repainted with your finish paint of choice.
